For 10 years, our camp tractor and backhoe has served the camp well.
It is used primarily for various maintenance, repair and construction
projects around the camp. It's done a lot of digging and trenching for
burying underground electrical, water and sewer lines. It is a 1974
model year and is definitely showing its age.
One of our camp vehicles is a 1989 4WD pickup that is heavily used
around the camp. This is also the one we depend on to make frequent
trips to Rapid City to pick up building and maintenance supplies.
We also like to use it for trailer towing to carry vehicles, other equipment,
or pick up larger amounts of lumber. It has 170,000 miles on it and is
increasingly in need of repairs.
Golf carts are needed for transportation around the camp, and hauling
cleaning supplies and other equipment. It is very handy for picnics
and barbeques at the park and also appreciated by campers with
handicaps or those needing a little lift around camp.
Many of the mattresses in the cabins around the camp need to be
replaced. We'd like to replace all mattresses in one cabin (~8 mattresses)
every year. The cost for a good twin mattress is around $110.
The camp has grown a great deal since the original cabins and Roger
Williams Lodge were built in the 1950s. The camp was then only operated
on a seasonal basis, too. new cabins have been built and others
remodeled. Three homes have been added for staff housing.
Two new lodges were built and a park-playground and lake added.
Soon, a new camp dining hall will be a reality. As the camp facility has
grown, so have the maintenance, remodeling and construction needs.
The camp shop is overwhelmed and can no longer handle the camp's
needs. It lacks the space required for equipment storage and for working
the various on-going projects. A larger shop area is fast becoming a major
need at Camp Judson.
An air compressor-jack hammer is also needed for general camp use.
